Reclaim CIS deducted from your company

A limited company that works as a CIS subcontractor has tax deducted by its contractors. It claims that tax back through its payroll: the year-to-date total goes on an Employer Payment Summary (EPS), and HMRC sets it against the PAYE and National Insurance the company owes, repaying any balance after the tax year. Fileyear files the EPS from the deduction statements’ total, and carries it into the company’s accounts.

How it works

  1. The month

The tax month, and the CIS deducted from the company since 6 April. Fileyear starts from last month’s claim.

  2. Check and submit

The EPS goes to HMRC before the 19th; pay HMRC only what is left after the claim.

Questions directors ask

Can a limited company reclaim CIS on its Company Tax Return?

No. A limited company claims CIS deductions through its payroll, on the Employer Payment Summary; the CT600 has no box for them. Its accounts show the full price of the work as sales and what HMRC still owes as a debtor, and Fileyear fills that in from these claims.

Where does the figure come from?

From the monthly CIS deduction statements each contractor must give the company. Fileyear starts from last month’s total.
