Step by step

  1. In Seller Central, open the inventory ledger’s summary view and choose your year end as the date. Download it.
  2. Add stock you hold outside Amazon: your own unit, a 3PL, goods on their way to you that you’d paid for. See FBA stock at the year end.
  3. Work out what each product cost: the supplier’s price plus shipping, import duty and delivery into Amazon’s warehouses1. Leave out Amazon’s fees and storage.
  4. Check for anything worth less than it cost, such as units Amazon marks as damaged, and write those down. See how to value stock.

On Fileyear

On the year-end questions, drop the ledger download (or Amazon’s Manage FBA Inventory report), and add a cost list with each SKU’s unit cost, or type what the goods cost in total.

Why it matters

Without closing stock, everything bought in the year is a cost of this year, so profit and Corporation Tax are understated in a year stock grows and overstated in a year it shrinks. HMRC takes the stock figure in the accounts as its starting point2.

See Fileyear for online sellers for the supported stock, payout and bookkeeping inputs.
